Losing weight is hard. Being overweight is hard. Pick your hard.

18 months ago I wouldn’t have been able to run across the road. I was overweight and unhealthy. I knew that I needed to lose weight but when the kids got bikes for Christmas and I couldn’t go for a short cycle without feeling ill I knew changes had to be made. I put the head down and immersed myself in exercise and cleaned up my diet. It was pure dogged determination. I lost 7 stone last year in the space of 7/8 months and it has given me a new lease of life. It’s great having more energy to keep up with the kids.

Now that I’m healthier and fitter I like to take on different physical challenges to keep myself motivated. I keep active so I don’t let myself slip back to old habits. The Reign of Terror obstacle event in Kells, Co. Kilkenny is my next challenge to keep me focused on staying healthy and happy. The Reign of Terror event seems to me like something that will be fun, even childlike,  back to playing in mud with my friends!

I’m not doing any training in particular for the Reign of Terror. At the moment I am reasonably fit and try to go for a walk or run most days.  We have recently started a Strength and Conditioning class in Clara so I joined that as well in the hope that I will build up some upper body strength for some of the obstacles. We all encourage each other along and are trying to do a bit more each week.  Being members of Clara GAA club, which is Kilkenny’s only GAA Healthy Club, has also been a benefit as over the last year there has been plenty of opportunities to take part in physical activity that were not previously available to members.

I’m doing Reign of Terror with a group of Clara’s finest women! Our team name is ‘The Durty Dozen’ and we are all at different levels of fitness.  Some of the ladies run regularly while others have been spurred into action because of the Reign of Terror. There is a great buzz in the group about the event. We are all enjoying the craic associated with the preparations and are looking forward to the wind-down party later that evening and night.  We are being spoiled by Neans of McSweeney Media who has sponsored T-shirts for the entire group.

Registering for Reign of Terror with a great bunch of women to share the crazy day is something to look forward to. I think it will be great fun. I’m not fooled into thinking it will be easy but we will go at our own pace and if we don’t die laughing at each other I am confident we will all get on fine! Most importantly it will keep me focused for the next few weeks and help me stick to a happy, healthy lifestyle. I’m really looking forward to doing the event. Bring on October 21st!
